The search for speed,  reliability, and passenger comfort lead to many interesting combinations of steam and sail, but they did not feel comfortable enough yet with steam to completely get rid of the sail.  Most of the vessels in this section were packet ships that ran regular routes carrying mail, passengers and some cargo. These vessels were the precursors to the modern ocean liner.
