When I was 14 years old and  racing small class sailboats back in the 1960s I was continually looking at pictures of old schooners and square-riggers.  I told my dad that some day I wanted to sail on a square-rigger.   He answered with the best knowledge of the time, which was: that I may as well forget that idea because they were all gone and weren't coming back.  Fortunately he was incorrect; they are coming back and I did get to sail on one for over a year.  It is no longer an impossible dream and here are the pictures to prove it.

Most of the best pictures from my collection are here.  If you have some good pictures that you would like to share, please email me and I will try and get them on the site.

The bulk of my pictures are of the replica 18th century brig, The Lady Washington.  I served in the capacities of boatswain, first mate and captain, sailing from San Diego to SE Alaska.  As boatswain I was in charge of keeping miles of rigging working.  Unfortunately it never occurred to me to take systematic documentary pictures, so there are many great details that are absent.  A great deal of the pictures were taken by guests and friends who kindly shared their pictures.  In many cases I never knew the name of the photographers, so thanks to all the generous photographers who have contributed to my collection.

Many of the pictures in the Various Vessels section are of vessels that came out to greet the Lady Washington when we arrived in a new port.  The information that I have on them may not be perfectly accurate.
