The Endeavour is a modern English replica of Capt. Cook's ship from the mid 18th century. Although larger, it is very similar to the Lady Washington in many of the rigging details.  These pictures were taken in Hull, UK by Dennis Jack.

The Endeavour was used extensively in the recent movie "Master and Commander", staring Russell Crowe. This is definitely the best movie in a long time involving a square-rigger.  Considering that almost the entire movie takes place on board there was plenty of opportunity for someone to say something completely dumb, but no one ever did.  All the nautical language is correct.  The attention to detail is very good; at one point in one of the shots of the ship there was even someone out on the head rails using the facilities. There is one brief but awesome shot of her with all the stuns'ls set, which was breath taking, for those who knew what they were seeing.

main top.jpg (68268 bytes)     The main-top.  The fore-shrouds seem to be wormed.

anchor.jpg (51128 bytes)     The anchors, a bower and the lunch hook.  American vessels frequently have a metal star on the end of timbers,  but evidently British ones have a crown.  Notice the crown on the end of the cat head.

brailed spanker.jpg (59409 bytes)     The mizzen, brailed up.  Since the gaff is not raised and lowered like on more modern vessels, there is no need for mast hoops.  The sail is laced to the gaff and mast.

hearts.jpg (53697 bytes)     Detail of some hearts.   Hearts are used on the stays instead of deadeyes for adjusting the tension.
