All of the prints in this section are original woodblock prints, wood engravings, copper engravings, steel engravings or etchings. Many of them are documentary engravings of specific square-riggers or clipper ships and others are more artistic typical views from the period.

The square riggers, clipper ships and early steamships represented in this collection offer many interesting details for the nautical historian and model ship maker, since the engravings were completed during the lifetime of the ship. Even though the era of the clipper ship only lasted for a few decades, clipper ships continue to be the subject of paintings and drawings even today. The detail in these engravings tend to be very accurate compared to many of the modern renditions.

Most of the prints in this section are for sale at reasonable prices. Items that are not for sale or have already been sold can be viewed in the Archived Prints section. New items are in the New Acquisition section in addition to the Print Inventory section.

Engravings are composed of lots of very precise lines, which give tone, texture and detail to the print. These individual lines cannot be seen in a low resolution, quick loading web format. The extent of the minute details in copper and steel engravings is truly astounding; even in person some of the detail can only be seen with a magnifying glass. A brief explanation of the types of prints can be found on the About Prints page.

All the prints on this site have been transferred to a high resolution digital format and will soon be available for purchase on a CD, with which creditable full size copies can be printed out for personal use and study.
